Red Top Mountain Park, Georgia

On Wednesday afternoon we went to Red Top Mountain Park in Georgia, where part of Lake Allatoona is located. The idea was to have a picnic “al fresco” and enjoy the cool breeze in a day that temperature soars over 90 degrees. That’s exactly what we got! 🙂

Eastern Bluebirds

I happened to have a couple of cameras in my backpack in case I saw any birds.

We picked a nice place with near the lake shore in the woods. The Park provide picnic areas and this one had a gazebo type structure. I saw a couple of Eastern bluebirds walking on the ceiling trussers and took some shots.

The later I saw a couple of Canada Geese swimming fairly close to the shore and I took some shots too. Other than those I didn’t see any more birds. It’s a pity. I think it was because it was too hot! However, we did have a good family time having our lunch outdoors!

“The Birds of New Jersey” Book Review

"The Birds of New Jersey"

Knowing that Princeton University Press was inviting me to do a review to a new book by William J. Boyle Jr. titled “The Birds of New Jersey” filled me with excitement and the anticipation was tremendous, especially since I had lived in New Jersey most of my life.

When I received the book, I immediately began reading it. This is what I found:

  • I was surprised to find out  that New Jersey had such a variety of birds!
  • It was very easy  to get a brief yet accurate description and  relevant  information about the species and their habitats.The pictorial samples are a complement in vivid color.. All these is accompanied by a location map quite helpful to know the appropriate habitats, maps are coded in various colors, -“They are better color coded and make more sense that our Homeland Security’s Warning codes”.- I was delighted to find how comprehensive and easy was to read, without going into so deep research or study you learn the most relevant facts right away. For my next trip to New Jersey I promise you that this book will be in my backpack. I believe that Mr. Boyle had a “vision” and wrote the book in a way that was not an exclusivity for the elite Ornithologists but for anybody that loves birds and needs information about them. Good work Mr. Boyle!

Visiting the town of Marietta

Yesterday at noon I went to the town of Marietta, Georgia in company of my cousin that is visiting. We parked at the center of town to the Old Marietta Square.

Still looking very nice and attracting more tourists as I could see, most cafes and bars were busy so were the antiques stores and art galleries.

Walking around the square I couldn’t help but to notice a bunch of birds flying from tree to tree and going into the shrubs surrounding the square. I could identify to be House Sparrows. I had my camera with me but I found it hard to focus because the abundance of leaves and shadows, besides these Sparrows move too much an are very easy to camouflage among the leaves. I had a bunch of bad shots but I could get a couple of half  decent shots for posting today. 🙂

By the way the old section of the town of Marietta is very picturesque and cozy, great place to hunt for bargains on antiques and great place to find good art also. Cafes, Bars and Restaurants have a nice atmosphere and plenty of good stuff. You should visit this town some day.
