I found what I thought was a great blue heron in breeding plumage on Sunday. It seemed small, though, and just “different” somehow. I wasn’t nearly close enough for my camera to do a good job of getting an image, but now I’m thinking it may have been a tricolored heron. I’ve never seen one in breeding plumage, and rarely see one. They’re around in our area, but not common.

The GBH is much larger than the tricolored heron and grayer, also have a patch of black on the sides. Thanks for sharing, Linda. 🙂
That’s the second heron blog I have looked at today, a striking bird.
