Downy Visitor
The sudden visit of a Downy Woodpecker in my backyard was a great surprise for me, this was the second time, since 2012. Never the less it was a happy moment for me.
This bird is a rather small woodpecker with a hairy or downy breast and under parts, checkers boar like black and white wings, a red crown on head.
It’s a shy bird, not gregarious and very independent.
He stayed for a few minutes perched on a branch and the moved to the high tree area.
I have some pictures of this bird on today’s gallery. Enjoy!

What an attractive bird, thanks for the pictures.
Thank you Susan! 🙂
Nice captures! Is it a juvenile?
I don’t think so! If you get that impression because the fuzzy front, that’s what it looks always, like down feathers almost like hair. Thanks N.! 🙂
What a joy to receive a visit from a downy woodpecker. Great photos, HJ. 🙂
Thank you very much Jet! 🙂
He’s so cute!! ❤
I totally agree with you Lorrie! Thanks! 🙂
Lovely pix. HJ! He looks so carefree and contented hanging out there! 🙂
I was happy to see him! Thanks A.! 🙂
A dear little bird!
Thanks Clare! 🙂
Great pix! Looks like a younger bird somehow. I’m surprised you don’t get these guys more often, they’re definitely in your range. I can count on them in my yard all year ’round, particularly in winter. But it might be because where I live they have fewer options so it’s a more compressed population. 🙂
That could be the reason! I hoping that he’ll come back soon! Thanks Lisa! 🙂
Suet & peanuts. I hope so too!
He is VERY beautiful ! Why do you think this bird is so rare in your area …?
I’ve no idea but I guess it depends of how many individual are in the area so they can mate and build a nest. They aren’t rare but not frequent visitors. Thanks M-R! 🙂
Neat work.
Thanks Tom! 🙂
One of my favorite backyard birds.
Thank you for sharing Donna! 🙂

I’m glad he came to visit! Downy woodpeckers are one of my favorites and I get the pleasure of seeing a lot of them both at home and in the northwoods. Wonderful photos, once again H.J!
