The White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) is a passerine bird of the New World sparrow family Passerellidae. In winter, this species migrates to the southern and eastern United States. They are differential migrants with females migrating farther, increasing the proportion of females at lower latitudes in the Atlantic flyway. Females are smaller so they would not perform as optimally at colder, higher latitudes, and females avoid competition with the dominant males of the winter hierarchies by migrating farther. There is also no benefit for females to be among the first to return after winter, so migrating farther allows the males to return and establish territory a few weeks before their arrival.

House Sparrow
The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a bird of the sparrow family Passeridae, found in most parts of the world. It is a small bird that has a typical length of 16 cm (6.3 in) and a mass of 24–39.5 g (0.85–1.39 oz). Females and young birds are coloured pale brown and grey, and males have brighter black, white, and brown markings. One of about 25 species in the genus Passer, the house sparrow is native to most of Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, and a large part of Asia. Its intentional or accidental introductions to many regions, including parts of Australasia, Africa, and the Americas, make it the most widely distributed wild bird.
The white throated Sparrow is brilliant. I love their song. I have gained respect for the House Sparrows after watching them work together to feed their young.
You have so many different varieties of sparrow HJ which we only have the common introduced house sparrow which is a pest. We have many lovely finches which do well in our hot dry deserts which are very similar in structure.
Fantastic head-on photo of the white-throated sparrow, HJ, and interesting info about the migrating females, too. All the range maps say this sparrow winters in Calif. but I have never, not once, seen this sparrow on the west coast. I think they’re such stunning birds, but have only ever seen them in the eastern or midwestern U.S. Thanks for this lovely look today, my friend.

Thank you very much, Jane. 🙂

You’re right, Ashley, we call them the New World Sparrows which are many. The House Sparrow was introduced from Europe. Thank you, my friend. 🙂
I like that cheery sparrow.
Thank you, Tom. 🙂

Don’t worry, one of these days you’ll see one! Thanks for sharing, my friend. 🙂
