Common Moorhen

The Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), also known as the waterhen or swamp chicken, is a bird species in the rail family (Rallidae). It is distributed across many parts of the Old World. The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. The species is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests. Elsewhere it is likely the most common rail species, except for the Eurasian coot in some regions. The closely related common gallinule of the New World has been recognized as a separate species by most authorities, starting with the American Ornithologists’ Union and the International Ornithological Committee in 2011.

The Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) is a pernine raptor which breeds from the southeastern United States to eastern Peru and northern Argentina. It is the only species in the genus Elanoides. Most North and Central American breeders winter in South America where the species is resident year round.

  1. Your Common Moorhen looks almost identical to our Dusky Moorhen. Love your Swallow-tailed Kite, what a beautiful bird ! would love to get a close up on that raptor we never see here.

    • The Swallow-tailed Kite is very beautiful, I’ve seen it and photographed only in flight. Thank you, Ashley. 🙂
