Their name to me would suggest that they fulfill the same role as our oxpeckers, i.e. attending large hooved animals and picking external parasites from their hides?
They eat all kinds of seeds and insects stirred by cattle from the grazing pastures, but they do not ride on the cattle to get them, I imagine that all the manure must have plenty of insects.
Fantastic photo, HJ — the yellow background to highlight the two tones, and a beautiful pose.
Thank you, my friend. I appreciate it. 🙂
Very nice HJ, you have done well to capture the behaviour of the bird with the beautiful background.
Thank you very much, Chris. I’m glad that you liked it. 🙂
They really do ride on the backs of the bison, they have a badd reputation for being parasitic, but are attractive-looking.
The birds know that, some other birds do reject the eggs, but some other don’t mind that occurrence. Thanks for sharing, Jane. 🙂

Very interesting, thanks for entertaining my curiosity!
Awesome shot, HJ, I’ve always thought this bird unique-looking! 🙂
Thank you, Donna. 🙂
