Red Gallery – Northern Cardinal
During winter, both male and female will fluff up their down feathers in order to trap warm air next to their body and keeping cold air from reaching their body. The down feathers are small and hairlike at the base of each flight feather.

As beautiful as ever, HJ!!
Thanks so much Indira. 🙂
So pretty, HJ! You are so lucky to have such awesome backyard beauties! 🙂
I love Nature and she loves me! Thanks Donna. 🙂
Always enjoy your cardinals, HJ.
I appreciate that very much Chris. Thanks. 🙂
I love the female on the pine branch!
Pretty! Thank you K. 🙂
Always a welcome sight on a Saturday, H.J. I hope you are enjoying your weekend.
Thank you Tanja. I’m enjoying an all day rain and will have more rain the next few days…I’ll stay indoors and comfortable!
I find that I get a lot more done when I am confined to my desk because of a nice rainy day (or days). Glad to hear you are comfortable, H.J. Have a good week.
