What’s Up? – Raining on my seeds…

Raining on my seeds…

We have been getting copious amounts of rain lately, right after the cold days subsided. It has been raining  every day from morning to night. We hardly see the blue sky, it’s gray and dark instead.

I know for what I’m able to see, that my birds are having a hard time to feed when it’s raining. Once in a while, the rain stops and most of the birds desperately come out trying to find any dry seeds. They can be seen waiting in sight in the surrounding areas of the deck. That’s my cue: It is the time  I go out and dump all the soggy seeds and refill with fresh dry ones. As soon as this is done, Birds get excited for getting their meals!

The Mourning Doves are more in quantity and kind of mob the feeders, that’s when my “Sheriff”  (Northern Mockingbird) comes along and chases every body out! He eats some peanuts and then leaves. I have the feeling that he means to protect his territory but not to harm anyone.

Of course, five minutes later would start raining again!

  1. Your efforts are commended, HJ, I know your feathered friends love and appreciate you for taking care of them! BTW, Sheriff looks quite dashing, glad he’s just keeping order amongst the crowd, and letting others get their share too! 🤗

    • Sheriff does get a bit bossy with the other birds now… I suspect that he must be a bit moody lately if he has a nest with a partner incubating. I may be wrong. He worries too much about the seeds. Especially shooing away a dozen doves that eat like no-day tomorrow! Thank you Donna. 🙂

    • Maybe…I’ve been spoiling them! 🙂 No, I don’t know why. The feeders can dry quickly during the Summer rains but now could take days before they dry. With the temperatures so low in the mornings thatI find the feeders frozen then I need a scraper to clean them. You’re lucky with you birds Dorinda. Thank you. 🙂

      • I never thought about the freezing part. Our feeders are closed, so the feed is protected. but I do, sometimes, spread the seed on my patio. Maybe I think they’re eating, but the rain is really washing it away lol

  2. Love hearing about the activities at your feeder, HJ, on these rainy days. It’s great that you change out the soggy seeds before they turn to mold, and tend so lovingly to your avian charges.

    • The reports about my backyard are not complaints. I’m always happy to see my birds, they make me smile too. Of course, the weather factor has to be considered but it wouldn’t change my commitment at all. I’m sure you understand that. Thanks my friend. 🙂

  3. I love the Sheriff! Soggy seeds are a problem. I try to salvage what’s dry… I was brushing snow off the seeds this morning, but it will continue to snow today, it will be interesting to see if anything gets eaten at all by the time I get home. Can hardly wait for warmer weather!

    • It’s not absolute that no birds will eat what’s soggy. I prefer to clear all these soggy seeds to dry them later, then fill new batch when rain stops. I really don’t mind doing that. Thank you Lisa for sharing. 🙂
