What’s Up?…

Day after Irma…

The day after a downgraded hurricane Irma passed our town, we had a full day of rain before it arrived after midnight on Tuesday which continued for half of next day. That morning, first thing I did was to go outside and make an assessment of the conditions of my house and the surrounding areas, Fortunately, all seemed to be in good order, we did not lose electric power, communications nor Internet. The creek that runs along my backyard was a bit overflowing but nothing to be worried about.

My next assessment was about my birds, feeders, houses etc. Even when was still raining I immediately filled the saucer-feeders (some broken) with fresh seeds also refilled the nectar bottle for the hummingbirds.

Not very long after I was stunned by all the birds that started to come out of the trees, looking for a meal. They were starving! Poor little things.

I even had four hummingbirds that have had a feast and are giving me a show with their game playing.

I prepared my camera and shot away! Today I will show some of the photos from that day. Excuse their appearance, remember that they were under so much physical stress.

    • I agree with that. We must remember that they are used to live outdoors in the wild. I suspect that they know how to handle all types of weather irregularities. Thank for sharing Sherry. 🙂

  1. Oh those poor little things! I’m so glad they have you to care for them and provide them with full bellies after the storm! I think these are beautiful photos that capture something really special in how the birds look. Glad to hear you had no issues from the storm!

    • Thank you A. for your concern about my bird’s safety also for my own. Fortunately, the hurricane did not cause any damage, just copious rain and gusted winds. 🙂

  2. I’m glad you did well. Finding food and water (and shelter) after such a storm are priorities for everyone, it seems. There’s quite a movement going on right now to provide hummingbird feeders to Rockport, Texas, which was nearly destroyed in Harvey. They’re in the heart of the hummer flight path, and there’s nothing left. The last I heard, 300 feeders, sugar, and purified water had been provided, and they’re hoping to double that. Even people whose houses are gone are willing to put up and maintain feeders on their property.

    • This is wonderful and so valuable to the lives of hummingbirds and protect the continuation of future generations. Thank you for providing me with such great news. I appreciate it very much. I’m planning to have more hummingbird feeders for next year. 🙂

    • It was a rough ride for them but they overcame the storm like good sailors. I was surprised to see them reappear…they’re my champions! Thank you very much my friends. 🙂
