Go to the Light
We all know that without light the miracle of photography is practically impossible. Cameras nowadays are very sophisticate and advanced technically but still have the need of capturing light in order to realize an image.
It makes a big difference when the light hits the subject in an optimal angle for a photograph, because, the camera is able to register more colors, which we, with our fantastic eyes most times can not distinguish when we look at moving subjects or we move our eyes constantly. If we apply this to seeing birds (In this case). We see the photos closer with more attention later and we discover a gamut of colors that we didn’t see before.
Today, I’m posting some pictures I shot at different times of the day and from obviously different light angles thus allowing this shots display more attractive images and with striking variety of natural colors.

The study of light is a fascinating one, and one that many of us spend our entire life admiring. I liked your discussion of light here, HJ, and your photos do a good job of emphasizing your topic. And birds with blue in them, like your stunning eastern bluebird here, can be so different in the light that they don’t even look blue sometimes. 😀
Light is a subject that has fascinated me since I was a child. Perception of light and reflective surfaces such feathers are wonderful masterpieces of design!

Great post, H.J. Light is hugely important in all photography, but especially in bird photography. The subjects are often small and move frequently, as we know 🙂 I often have the problem with too much strong light, particularly getting out details on white birds and other birds in the same picture. Your beautiful photos demonstrate the subject perfectly 🙂

I’m often surprised how different a creature looks depending on the way the light hits it. Also, often what I see with my eyes looks so much different to the image my camera takes (I am not very skilled at adjusting the settings!) Your photos illustrate very well how different angles of light change the colour of what we see.
That was exactly my point. Our eyes filter certain hues of color naturally, cameras are less forgiving. Thanks Jane for your comment! 🙂
