ANSWER TO SUNDAY PHOTO QUIZ
Can you ID this bird?
ANSWER: Female Red-winged Blackbird
The red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is a passerine bird of the family Icteridae found in most of North and much of Central America. It breeds from Alaska and Newfoundland south to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, and Guatemala, with isolated populations in western El Salvador, northwestern Honduras, and northwestern Costa Rica. It may winter as far north as Pennsylvania and British Columbia, but northern populations are generally migratory, moving south to Mexico and the southern United States. Claims have been made that it is the most abundant and best studied living bird in North America. The red-winged blackbird is sexually dimorphic; the male is all black with a red shoulder and yellow wing bar, while the female is a nondescript dark brown. Seeds and insects make up the bulk of the red-winged blackbird’s diet.
My personal appreciation and thanks to all the readers that participated to ID the bird! – HJ

What a decorative fellow! The bird atop with the blue chest is captivating too! Well caught HJ! 🙂
He’s a handsome bird, by the way his chest feathers are white, it looks bluish because is early morning and the sun ls low and light is blocked by trees. Thank you Barbara! 🙂
Good job with your quiz, H.J! Totally got me on that one! Female red-winged black bird — I should have thought of that!! Guess it was late in the day after a lot of stress, I will blame that for not thinking of the answer! LOL 🙂 Keep up the interesting posts and great photos!
Thanks Amy! You always have the greatest excuses! 🙂 Funny!
😀
What a wonderful shot H.J, I love how proudly the gorgeous Eastern Towhee surveys his domain.
Yes, It’s atop a tall pine tree and at first I didn’t notice him because he’s at higher level from my eye view. But later I took several shots in the dark background. Thank you very much Eily! 🙂
He appears so tiny on that branch.
But he’s not so tiny, he’s the size of a N. Mockingbird! Thanks G.! 🙂
Hi HJ…The first photo is lovely… Cutie birdie… ❤
I hope you have started a nice week. All the best to you, Aquileana 😀
Yes I have, thank you dear Aquileana, my best wishes to you too! 🙂 ❤
Thanks, HJ! 🙂 Interesting speckled pattern it has on its feathers!
When looking at this bird from far it looks dull and ordinary but when seen with a long lens in close-up becomes a colorful pattern of feathers. Thank you very much A. 🙂
Wow! I would never have guessed. The males look compltely different.
That’s right! Thank you Debra! 🙂
