Satisfaction and Excitement
It brought me a great sense of satisfaction and excitement to witness and photograph an Osprey right after catching a fish from the waters of a swamp area. I did not anticipate this, I was walking camera ready toward the pond when I heard an saw a splashing of water then I realized the presence of the Osprey. I shot what I could and got what I wanted! I had promised my friend Donna (The Osprey Queen) that one day I’d get to photograph an Osprey and I did!
The Osprey – Latin Name: Pandion haliaetus,
Sometimes known as the sea hawk, fish eagle, or fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching more than (24 in) in length and 71 in. across the wings. It is brown on the upper-parts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts. In 1994, the osprey was declared the provincial bird of Nova Scotia, Canada.
The Osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica, although in South America it occurs only as a non-breeding migrant.
As its other common name suggests, the Osprey’s diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It possesses specialized physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey.
NOTE: The Osprey is a new addition to my list of birds as: # 191

Wondrous sight!. Love those magnificent wings from behind. Great moment HJ!. The closest encounter I had with an Osprey was in my wooded backyard, by surprise. She swooped the ground swiftly among the trees and took off in her spectacular wings right beside me. I could see her pretty masked face from very close!.
You have no idea how happy I was to see the Osprey splashing and catching the fish. Good thing that I was walking with my camera ready. Great excitement that was! Thanks for sharing Carmen! 🙂
Good you were camera-ready!
Great captures HJ.. The wingspan on the Osprey photographed above is pretty incredible.
If you read about it, it takes a great amount of energy to dip half of her body in the water which brake her to a stop and then take off from that point. The difference with Bald Eagles that grab the fish from the surface only. Strong birds if you ask me! Thanks MD! 🙂
Congratulations on an awesome “catch”!!
Thank you very much Amy! 🙂
Marvelous, I’m very happy for you both: you for capturing the Osprey, and Osprey for capturing the fish!
You’re right Babsje! Thanks! 🙂
You’re welcome!
Wonderful shots. It IS amazing how strong these Osprey are.
Thank you MV! You’re right! 🙂
SWEEEET! Congrats HJ, I’m disappointed I was AWOL from blogging and missed this post!! I’m still now just as thrilled you saw and captured him/her (I’m leaning towards female from the chest ‘necklace’) with a fish no less! Excellent! 🙂
Thanks Donna! I promised to photograph an Osprey one day and finally did it! 🙂
