Satisfaction and Excitement

It brought me a great sense of satisfaction and excitement to witness and photograph an Osprey right after catching a fish from the waters of a swamp area. I did not anticipate this, I was walking camera ready toward the pond when I heard an saw a splashing of water then I realized the presence of the Osprey. I shot what I could and got what I wanted! I had promised my friend Donna (The Osprey Queen) that one day I’d get to photograph an Osprey and I did!

The Osprey – Latin Name: Pandion haliaetus,

Osprey

Osprey

Sometimes known as the sea hawk, fish eagle, or fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching more than  (24 in) in length and 71 in. across the wings. It is brown on the upper-parts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts. In 1994, the osprey was declared the provincial bird of Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica, although in South America it occurs only as a non-breeding migrant.

As its other common name suggests, the Osprey’s diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It possesses specialized physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey.

NOTE: The Osprey is a new addition to my list of birds as: # 191

  1. Wondrous sight!. Love those magnificent wings from behind. Great moment HJ!. The closest encounter I had with an Osprey was in my wooded backyard, by surprise. She swooped the ground swiftly among the trees and took off in her spectacular wings right beside me. I could see her pretty masked face from very close!.

    • If you read about it, it takes a great amount of energy to dip half of her body in the water which brake her to a stop and then take off from that point. The difference with Bald Eagles that grab the fish from the surface only. Strong birds if you ask me! Thanks MD! 🙂

  2. SWEEEET! Congrats HJ, I’m disappointed I was AWOL from blogging and missed this post!! I’m still now just as thrilled you saw and captured him/her (I’m leaning towards female from the chest ‘necklace’) with a fish no less! Excellent! 🙂
