Munch, Munch!

A couple of days ago I wrote about Blackbirds, posted some photos of Red-winged Blackbirds. Today, I add another member of the blackbird family: Brown-headed Cowbirds.

These birds are very numerous in the American territory as most blackbirds are actually. Well known for their never-satisfying appetite. I’m sure that most of you who happen to own bird feeders are aware of my description of the cowbird’s typical behavior.

Next, I have a group of pictures for you to enjoy!

  1. I have a never satisfying appetite as well 🙂

The last picture on the bottom is beautiful. That is one of the most amazing looking birds I’ve seen. Great picture and thank you for sharing!

  2. Beautiful pictures!. The fluffed up feathers are adorable. I had a large family in my garden spying on me from the trees to land en masse when I would leave the garden area. Interestingly, the reason to lay eggs in a host’s nest is to be able to remain with the flock moving and feeding. Still, the mother Cowbird will keep watching the host’s nest.

I love the brown head in contrast with the dark body in all iridescence common to this fantastic family of birds. Thank you for sharing these moments.

      • It is my pleasure, H.J.. As a conservation photographer, I hold in high esteem what fellow photographers do to bring appreciation to nature’s wonders. In today’s fragile Earth, we need to act concientously. By keeping our own personal ecosystem healthy, we contribute to a better world. I thank you for your work and for the protection of species that you encourage.

  3. Beautiful shots, H.J. I think cowbirds are pretty birds; it’s too bad they are so vilified. Interesting how the light makes the male look blue. Sort of like an Indigo Bunting effect. 🙂

    • Yes, light reflects from the feathers just like a prismatic mirror and color changes as per the angle of reflection. Thank you Lisa! 🙂
