I’ve met several people that expressed their opinion when talking about blackbirds, regardless of their kind_ these are not among their favorite birds.
My personal opinion couldn’t be farther. I do find them to be beautiful birds, with a striking strong figure and poise.
Throughout the seasons my backyard is visited by several kinds of blackbirds and let me tell you that they may be accused to be noisy and sometimes clumsy but they are in reality very smart birds and beautiful as well.
Today, I’m posting some photos of the Red-winged Blackbird, male and female.

One of my favourites!. They are strikingly beautiful and courageous. They literally ride o the back of large birds of prey to steer them away. They join the Common Grackle flocks to forage, making a splash of bright red among the larger birds. The pictures are fantastic. I love the immature plumage in as much as the beautiful red epaulettes!.
It’s so refreshing to read great descriptions of my post subjects made by my followers. Especially from someone like you Carmen. Thanks! 🙂
Thank you, H.J., for this wonderful blog and for the love and respect that you hold for your subjects. Our little friends bring joy, beauty and wisdom to our lives and this is precious.

I get a lot of grackles at my feeders and they are very interesting to watch. I find it so interesting how they will take peanuts and dip them in the bird bath to soften them up to eat! The black bird family are definitely intelligent birds!
You’re right Amy! Studies have been made about some of the blackbirds families in order to find out how intelligent they are with surprisingly results. They can solve simple physical problems and their ingenuity is higher than most other birds! Thanks for sharing Amy! 🙂
The photos show the detailed colors we miss when they fly overhead. Wonderful creatures.
Yes they are, thanks Gail! 🙂
