Bird Bravery

I have to post once more about the Northern Mockingbirds and praise them for being so brave and for protecting the bird community that lives within my backyard. Between last week and this week I’ve seen them chase away a Cooper’s Hawk that is about three times larger that the Mockingbird. Let me tell you that these really meant business.

I’m so proud of the “guardians” that’s what I call them!

  1. I don’t know if I would cal the Northern Mockingbird a brave bird, but I do know that they are very territorial, and will run off anything that comes close, and that does include those Red-tails and anything else. 🙂 Great pictures and post, H.J.

    • The reason I described the N. Mockingbird so is because from all the other birds the only one that face and chase the hawk is the N.M.!

    • Ohh, poor Lisa! You’re still thinking about the Red-winged Blackbird chasing you? They wooden hurt you! They just want you far from their nest. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

  2. The only Red-Winged Blackbird who ever chased me wanted a peanut. He doesn’t do that anymore, but I still get those ear-piercing whistles when he does show up.

    • I’m sorry Lisa, I was just teasing you! I see those blackbirds almost daily and know how rude they can be. I just hope I was not as rude as them! 🙂

  3. Beautiful captures, HJ! I’ve come to ‘know’ (and I think they me) two pairs of mockingbirds around our marshy inlet; and I love photographing them, when they’re ‘guarding’, they can strike so really cool poses! And they can really give you the eye too, lol! Just got lucky yesterday in photographing one momma feeding her young in a nest I’ve been watching, this morning two were out on a branch. Adorable! (My post to come soon!)
