American Robin

If there’s something I like to do when I see birds is to observe their patterns of behavior. In the case of the bird I picked for today, the mid-size American Robin with their rusty brown breasts and black head, back and tail. Their black eyes present  white crescents around them which make them peculiar. The have a sharp pointy yellow bill made to resist pocking the ground hard.

My observations showed that they usually fly in flocks of several individuals and particularly after a rainy day.

After they land they spread at one end of one area and walk separated in one direction as if combing the area. The previous rain has made the ground soft and muddy which makes it easy for them to poke it and go deep enough to get earth worms or grubs, they too surface because of the rain. They are very organized and once they get to the other end they all take flight together. Interesting isn’t it?

  1. This is the first Winter that I can recall the Robins stayed in our area. They were feeding on the berries left on the trees. It was quite the sight to see them in the trees among the berries and snow. Have a super day!

    • If they had snow on the ground or the ground is frozen, they reset to eating the leftover fruit they can find. Insects are gone too! Have a nice day too D.! 🙂

  2. I love this! I too enjoy observing their behavior when I’m out shooting. It’s really amazing to just be able to sit very still and watch. And once in a while take a photo :O)

    • That the way to do Photography, see everything through a lens, observe, analyze and then document by shooting the picture. Those images will be engraved in your mind. 🙂
BD, Don’t forget to shoot the Moon tomorrow, use you new camera and tripod.
