A bit of This and That

One bird of character is always around my backyard and it’s unavoidable, that is non other than the Cooper’s Hawk.

They appear not very often but I see them flying near by. They have nests on top of very tall pine trees about 300 yards away from my house. They usually come looking for voles or chip monks. It’s been about 3 years that don’t see those rodents in my backyard. That must be the reason that the Cooper’s Hawk is not coming as often as it used to do.

Another reason must be that I keep the grass short and the bushes far.

One thing that I’m combatting is the fire ants colonies, they seem to be more prolific with the hot weather. When I mow the grass I see mounds that I destroy and thousands of ants come out and I spread an ant bait powder on top. That does the work, but later another mound will appear some place else. This year I’ve seen more fire ants that previous years.

Have Patterns of Bird Migration Changed?

I have noticed a change in the pattern on which certain species of birds have visited my backyard, coma red to previous years. There are many species that have not showed up at all!

I analyzed this situation by manner of elimination, my feeders have the same food, the plants and flowers are the same, all trees are the same. Then all came to one factor which is the variant: Weather! Right from the start of the Spring we have had high weather temperatures and then summer is still annoyingly scorching and humid. Apparently the patterns of bird migration have been altered in order to survive the heat wave.

On Sunday I was on my way to another town to visit some relatives and I noticed at one point a small flock of geese flying to the north direction. It called my attention, maybe it is only a coincidence.

I’m posting some photos of Field Sparrows that I’m starting to see less of them.

Walk Around the House

When I walk around my house I usually encounter other kinds of animal species, some I photograph some others are not so memorable. Not all the time I walk with my camera but if I see anything worth shooting I go back in and get the camera.

I do my rounds looking for any kind of damage to the house due to rain, wind etc. Or find  foreign objects such as bottles, papers, cups, garbage that cretins throw when they walk or drive by. I also look for insects nests such as wasps, bees, spiders, ants etc.

What I find usually doesn’t amount to much really. But if I see butterflies I like to get some shots.
