Name this Dude

Today I’ll ask you, dear readers of my blog or any visitors for a big favor. I want this little bird (See photo) to have a pet name since this is going to be the third week that he’s been hanging out in my backyard. C-0573He spend the day on our deck, he’s not hurt or sick, he can fly, walk, eat , drink water etc. He is shy and keeps a low profile, he’s smaller than the average size of a Goldfinch.

We’re growing fond of him, he’s not afraid of people but we do not try to scare him or touch him. He’s a kind of mystery bird.

Other goldfinch come and go but he doesn’t connect with them or reacts in any way. If you notice, he has the black crown already and  breeding plumage so he’s not just a fledgling. Please choose one name for him from the Voting Box below. Those are names submitted by other readers on past days. Thank you for helping me with this endeavor. Thanks a lot!

VOTING BOX IS CLOSED

See result on Tuesday’s post. Thank you!

It’s a Jungle Out There!

I really enjoy seeing my backyard bustling with birds, all of them looking for food of course! For them become a practical way to select an urban place where to find their food and sate their hunger with no extra effort instead of having to go around trying to secure some kind of nourishment, all these imply great effort and waste of precious energy.

I understand that in a way I’m making their lives more comfortable for improvement of their survival rate by supplying food for them.

In the past few days I’ve had a greater number of Common Grackles getting their stomachs filled up in my backyard. These birds, definitely, are not the best mannered bunch if you didn’t know. They create havoc when they come in groups. Being larger in size than most birds that I’m used to feed daily, they push their way to take possession of all feeders with not a bit of shame! And, if they can not dispense themselves from the normal feeders (not designed for large birds) then they smartly proceed to knock them down, plain and simple.

What can you do? Not much, just let them be. At the very end, all birds get what they came looking for, one way or another.

It’s a jungle out there!

“I love them regardless…just the way they are!”

Golden Touch

This short story is about a little bird that arrived after a storm. The little bird is a male American Goldfinch. He was just appeared one day and he stayed in my backyard.

We noticed his presence on our deck and as many other birds do too but there’s something different about this goldfinch, he’s doesn’t get spooked when he sees us, he sits around and can spend a long period of time (in bird terms) just looking around. He avoids groups of birds, he doesn’t go to the feeders. Apparently he’s not hurt, he can walk, fly eat, drink, he can see and hear well too! The only difference I see in comparison is the size, he looks smaller than the other individuals of his specie. Is he a dwarf goldfinch? I don’t know.

It’s been a week and he’s there, I believe that he stays under the deck overnight.

We were a bit concerned because the Cooper’s Hawk keeps on coming and we wouldn’t like to see him hurt or…worse.

He waits patiently for all the other birds to finish their frenzy eating at the feeders, then once they are gone he takes over the deck floor and eats every little bit with some help of a Song Sparrow sometimes.

“I think I’m going to hire him to do the clean up of the deck permanently!”

  • I’d like to give him a name, would you help me out with this?

  • Once I get a list of names from you, I will post the list of names and you will be able to vote for the most likable one. How about it?
