These two energetic birds are members of the group of avians residing in my backyard. Northern Mockingbird and White-breasted Nuthatch. I see them all the time as they move around very comfortably and happy to have all the resources handy and conveniently replenished by me.
Can you blame them? They have it made!
I observe all birds that come to my feeders and I can tell you that by comparison to previous years, all these birds are in perfect health and full of energy, that’s my opinion.
Perhaps the extended and extreme cold weather might have something to do with it, by containing the reproduction of bacteria, mites, worms, microscopic germs and else!
I’m very thorough when it comes to observing and noticing differences, not normal shapes and erratic behavior. This year, so far I have not seen anything out of the ordinary and seemed quite normal from my observations I’ve done of the variety of species that visited my backyard.
Another theory would be that the weakest by sickness or other non-healthy subjects did not survive the cold spells hence only the stronger individuals remained.

From all the birds that frequent my backyard daily, I’d have to say that the Northern Cardinals are the most popular with anyone that see them. Their colors are very attractive as much as their general appearance.
In many occasions I’ve been talking to any of my neighbors outside and I’ve seen their faces lightened up when they spotted Cardinals going to my feeders, the smile of delight it’s immediate!. Most people react the same when they see these beautiful birds.
I’m very happy to have them around all the time for sure! Sometimes I talk to my neighbors and some where in the conversation there’s always a question, what do you feed them? Because they claim that the Cardinals don’t go to their feeders. I always oblige and tell them exactly what I feed them and where to get the seeds. I have the feeling that my advise is not working out for them!

Last Thursday we had a melange of a weather with snow, sleet, rain, ice…and a sunny afternoon! Is this crazy or what?
Schools were closed again, many commercial buildings were closed, many businesses closed early. What a calamity!
The good part was having Tyler at home and having lots of birds outside creating a riot protesting for food!
I had to go out with a scraper and break all the ice formed on the deck’s handrails. I also had to dislodge the clay saucers that where embedded in ice and bring them in to my kitchen sink to thaw them out with hot water. Then went back out and filled the feeders (I could feel hundreds of eyes watching me!). So I ran inside! (They might have tried to eat me alive too!)
So they came in droves and some small fights broke out but were quickly ended because if you waste your time fighting, then you don’t eat! (Bird Philosophy)
But it was really funny how they made such a mess because their haste to eat, just like hungry vultures on a carcass, leftovers of a den of lions in Africa!…Right! I’m exaggerating just a bit.
Seriously, I was really pleased by having these bunch of nice birds getting a decent meal.
I was even a bit surprised when I saw a Common Grackle! (Kind of early for the season) helping out with making the place into a bigger mess! Oy!
