Strutting Their Beauty

The past few days I’ve seen an increase in numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds coming to feed in my backyard, being all of them male! Several days have past and I haven’t seen one female yet.

All the current blackbirds look well groomed and in perfect health, they are a bunch of male in optimum condition looking for mates (I presume). These larger individual add a bit more dynamics by displaying their male calls and ritual challenges. Voicing their virility and youth versus their male competitors. The atmosphere gets charged with demonstrations of strength and saturated with testosterone actions. Low flying, fast diving pirouettes, noisy and wing flexing. Cool stuff!
