Watch Like a Hawk

Although I see a Cooper’s Hawk almost daily, I haven’t had the opportunity to shoot a single photo of him. Every time he shows up sits on the deck railing for a couple of minutes and takes off as soon as he sees any movement. I’m haven’t seen him pick up any birds or attack any creatures, fortunately!

The influx of birds to the feeders is steady and I see many juveniles birds coming and going all day. Common Grackles are still in vogue and doing their ‘thing’, knocking the feeder to spill the seeds! I do not worry about that anymore because they will clear the floor of every little piece by the end of the day!

For the past few days I’ve been keeping an eye on a male American Goldfinch that has been left stray in my backyard. He is a bit small in size, maybe a dwarf, he hangs out around the deck. I will tell you more about him and post pictures of him next Thursday.

  1. Such lovely birds! Thank you for capturing them in this beautiful shot! There are a ton of birds that come by where I live (especially this time of year) and I see lots of bird watchers come in the morning to take pictures. I see them everyday on my walk but my phone camera is not great and I am not as patient or fast to capture them :p So Thank you for sharing 🙂

    • I was thinking that Hawk might have little nestlings to feed too. He’s been here more often than usual. I wish he turns vegetarian! 🙂

  2. Now look, HJ ! – it’s your bloody DUTY to stand around for hours with camera in hand, just waiting for the Cooper’s hawk, OK? [grin]
Love the little birdies – always do. I never tire of looking at them …

  3. Great shots, HJ! You’re getting quite a variety at your feeders. Especially love the Towhee and the Field Sparrow. Wish I got all these around my house! 🙂

    • You could change the seeds, avoid peanuts, peeled sunflower seeds, buy only the smallest seeds. and the big birds will not stay long. Sorry Amy! 🙂

      • Yes, I’ve been considering doing that – sometimes I change to safflower in the summer but then they just fling it on the ground in their unhappiness. 🙂 And I always feel bad for the blue jays who come looking for their peanuts.

      • Grackles make god subjects for photography too!
I take all birds! I don’t get aggravated by them! Just make a few comments about them! Thanks for sharing Amy! 🙂

    • I’ve been blessed with Cardinals all year, they nest and do not migrate from my backyard. Thank you Jadi for sharing! 🙂
