Wow!!! These are great images! What do you leave out for them? My brother-in-law and I can’t seem to get any luck with our hanging feeder block (the squirrels keep scooping out the mix).
I feed them a rich mix of seeds for all types of birds. Apparently the RHW seem to like a small round seed that I do not know the name. Look at the bird standing on grass, he has a mouth-full and you can see the seeds on the ground.
Small round seed sounds like millet to me. I just checked Birds of North America Online and they say Red-Headeds are the most omniverous of all the woodpecker species, and yes, they eat seeds. Who would have thought? Gorgeous pictures. We don’t get many of these guys around here, but they do exist. I’ve never had one in my yard; not enough edge forest on my block. Thanks for posting these!
